Membership

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help, and community service organization which now numbers 2.4 million – men and women – in more than 14,000 American Legion Posts worldwide.  These Posts are organized into 55 Departments – one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Eligibility

Membership eligibility in The American Legion is based on honorable service within the U.S. Armed Forces April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941, and continuing.

Transfer

Already a member and new to Hertford & surrounding area?

It is very easy to transfer.  Just come and join us for Breakfast and Monthly meeting, and the Adjutant can take care of the necessary paperwork

Dues

Annual dues are $40 and are collected for the following year beginning 1 July of the current membership year. Notices are sent out by the National Headquarters during the Summer and Fall.  Members can renew online thru MyLegion.org or they can renew locally thru the Post Adjutant.

National is offering a 3-year membership, which will supersede any dues increases (National will increase their portion of the total dues amount by $5 starting 1July 2024) during the next three years.  There is, however, no discounted rate, and you have to renew online only.

Our Executive Committee has voted to NOT increase our dues for the 2024-25 membership year, so members can help the Post save $5 per year per member by signing up for the 3-year renewal before 1 July 2024.

If members cannot or prefer not to sign up online, see the Adjutant with a check for $120 or cash, and we can process the renewal on your behalf.
